Formosan Termite Control & Treatment Experts Serving Florida

Formosan termites are one of the most aggressive termite species found in Florida. Known for their extremely large colonies, these termites can cause significant structural damage to homes and buildings if infestations are not addressed quickly. Unlike some other termite species, Formosan termites are capable of forming colonies that contain hundreds of thousands or even millions of termites. Their large population allows them to consume wood at a much faster rate than many other termite species.
My Son & I Pest Control provides professional Formosan termite inspections and treatment services designed to identify infestations early and implement effective control solutions throughout South Florida, Tampa Bay, and Central Florida.

Understanding Formosan Termites

Formosan termites are a type of subterranean termite that lives in underground colonies and requires moisture from the soil to survive. These termites build mud tubes to travel between their colony and the wooden structures they infest. Because Formosan termite colonies can grow extremely large, they are capable of causing significant structural damage in a relatively short period of time. Formosan termites commonly attack structural wood framing, wooden support beams, flooring and subflooring, exterior wood structures, and foundation areas.
Early detection and professional termite control are important for preventing extensive damage caused by Formosan termite infestations.

Why Formosan Termites Are Especially Dangerous in Florida

Formosan termites (Coptotermes formosanus) are technically a subterranean species, but their behavior and destructive capacity far exceeds typical subterranean termites. A mature Formosan colony can contain several hundred thousand to over one million workers, compared to the tens of thousands found in a typical Eastern subterranean colony.

That population size translates directly to speed of damage. Where a standard subterranean colony might take years to cause structural compromise, a large Formosan colony can weaken load bearing wood within months.
South Florida, particularly Miami-Dade County and Broward County, sits within what researchers and pest control professionals refer to as a high pressure Formosan termite zone. The combination of tropical humidity, year round warmth, and older housing stock in neighborhoods like Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Little Havana, and older Broward communities creates ideal conditions for Formosan colonies to establish and grow rapidly.

Formosan termites are also capable of building carton nests, moisture retaining mud structures, inside wall voids, allowing them to survive even when the soil connection is disrupted. This makes some Formosan infestations unusually resistant to soil based treatments alone.

Signs of Formosan Termite Infestation

Formosan termite infestations often leave visible signs around the structure as termites search for food sources.

Common signs of Formosan termite activity include:
✔ Mud tubes along foundations or walls
✔ Swarming termites near lights or windows
✔ Hollow or damaged wood
✔ Bubbling paint or damaged wood surfaces
✔ Visible termite activity near crawl spaces or foundations

If you notice any of these warning signs, scheduling a professional termite inspection can help confirm whether Formosan termites are present.

Comprehensive Formosan Termite Control & Treatment Solutions

As a family-owned business, My Son & I Pest Control is committed to providing high-quality termite control services throughout South Florida, Tampa Bay, and Central Florida.
Because Formosan termites live in large underground colonies, effective treatment focuses on eliminating termite colonies in the soil while protecting the structure from further damage. Our technicians implement targeted termite control strategies designed to reduce termite activity and protect the structure long-term.

Comprehensive
Inspection

We conduct a detailed inspection to identify Formosan termite activity and locate potential entry points around the structure. Our technicians inspect foundations, crawl spaces, exterior walls, and other vulnerable areas where termites may enter the home.

Customized Treatment Plan

After the inspection, we develop a treatment plan based on the severity of the infestation and the structure of the property. Treatment may include soil treatments, termite bait systems, or other protective solutions designed to eliminate termite colonies.

Treatment Application

Our technicians apply targeted treatments designed to eliminate Formosan termite colonies in the soil around the structure. These treatments help create a protective barrier that reduces termite activity and prevents termites from entering the home.

Monitoring and Prevention

After treatment, we provide recommendations and monitoring strategies to help ensure Formosan termites do not return. Regular inspections and preventative treatments can help identify termite activity early and protect the structure long-term.

How to Identify Formosan Termites

Formosan termites are often confused with Eastern subterranean termites. Key differences:
Swarmers (alates): Formosan swarmers are yellowish-brown, approximately 15mm in length including wings, with hairy wings covered in fine hairs — distinguishable from Eastern subterranean swarmers, which have bare wings. Formosan swarms in Florida typically occur on warm, humid evenings from April through June, often around lights.

Soldiers: Formosan soldiers are more distinctive than other species — they have a fontanelle (a pore on the head) that secretes a white defensive fluid when disturbed, and their head is oval-shaped rather than rectangular.

Carton nests: Finding grey-brown, spongy material inside a wall void or hollow area of your home is a strong indicator of Formosan termites specifically. This carton material is unique to Formosan colonies and is not produced by other Florida termite species.

If you suspect Formosan termite activity, do not delay scheduling an inspection. The rate of colony growth makes early intervention critical.

Types of Termites We Treat

Florida’s warm climate supports several termite species capable of causing serious structural damage to homes and businesses. Identifying the termite species involved is an important step in determining the most effective treatment approach.

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites live inside wooden structures and often require structural fumigation to eliminate infestations completely.

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites live in underground colonies and travel through mud tubes to reach wood structures.

Formosan Termites

Formosan termites are an aggressive type of subterranean termite known for their extremely large colonies and rapid damage potential.

Dampwood Termites

Dampwood termites prefer moist or decaying wood and are typically associated with water-damaged structures.

We specialize in termite inspections, termite control, and drywood termite fumigation, helping property owners protect their structures from destructive termite activity.

Formosan Termites and Structural Fumigation

Because of their colony size and their ability to establish satellite nests inside wall voids, Formosan termite infestations frequently require structural fumigation for complete elimination. Soil treatments and baiting systems can reduce Formosan pressure but are often not sufficient on their own when the colony has established significant presence inside the structure.
Whole-structure fumigation with a gas fumigant penetrates wall voids, structural framing, and carton nest material — reaching areas that liquid treatments and baits cannot. For South Florida homeowners dealing with a confirmed Formosan infestation, particularly in older or wood-framed construction, fumigation is frequently the most reliable path to full elimination.
